Gargamelle Cove
Gargamelle Cove on Point Riche Road, which leads to the Parks Canada National Historic Site Museum and the Point Riche Lighthouse.
The Cod monument pays tribute to all our rich fishing heritage; as well as to our fishers, including our ancient Indigenous cultures; as well as the French Basque and English who fished from our community as far back as the early 1500's. This special public art not only symbolizes an important part of the region's history and culture. The Cod was a critical part of the development of Newfoundland and Labrador's economy; and this legendary fish has become a cherished icon.
Commissioned by the Town of Port au Choix, the monument also represents the area's strong connection to the sea and its traditions, especially in many outports around our province. The monument is located in scenic Gargamelle Cove, once a thriving fishing area. This special cove still embodies the spirit of the ancestors, who fished from these shores for hundreds of years. The first family settled in the cove in 1874 and the community of Port au Choix was established by 1911. "There is no stronger definition, No stronger attachment and symbolism, than Newfoundland and Labrador with the Atlantic Cod." - Cod Scientist George Rose
