This image shows the statue of Gasper Corte-Real, wrapped in orange on September 30, 2025, as part of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation rally organized by First Light.
"This statue memorializes a navigator whose expeditions are recorded as seizing Indigenous people on these coasts and transporting them across the Atlantic.
Exploration without consent causes harm that echoes through families and teaching today.
We wrap to close with clarity: truth, consent, and care must guide what we honour in this place."
Public art is powerful - every monument is a choice about what we uphold.
