The memorial pays tribute to Canada's past and present peacekeeping role in the world since 1956. The life-sized statue depicts the moment of a peacekeeper releasing a dove as a symbol of peace. August 9 is known as National Peacekeepers' Day In Canada.
The provincial government and the City of St. John's provided funding for the park and sculpture. The maquette of the statue can be seen in the main lobby of the Confederation Building in St. John's.
Artist bio
Gerald Squires was born in Change Islands, NL in 1937. A painter, sculptor, printmaker, art activist and teacher, much of Squires' large body of work finds its inspiration in the landscape and culture of Newfoundland. Among many other honours, Squires became a member of the Order of Canada in 1999.
