Brian Burke was commissioned by Tourism Bell Island to create Beginnings, a combination sculpture and mural; it depicts Gregory and Catherine Normore, the first recorded settlers on Bell Island, in their work elements – fishing and making fish. The artwork is located next to Harry’s Lookout on Beach Hill, 300 meters from the ferry terminal.

Burke erected a concrete rock wall for the mural and noted that “the colouring (of the work) was achieved by crushing coloured glass and using it as sand in the concrete for the surface coat wall.” Burke’s new mixed media mural will be installed in Lance Cove Beach in August, 2021.
