Bill Ritchie was commissioned to create a sculpture for a park on family land donated in memory of Peter Barry Duff, who drowned in 1984 at the age of 17.
Ritchie worked in collaboration with fabricator Kenny Power of Tors Cove on the sculpture and its installation. The aluminum sculpture consists of a seated figure and a flying eagle, depicting the moment that the eagle is released from his hands. The artist was inspired by a story told by the family about Peter taking care of an injured eagle before releasing it back into the wild.
Artist bio
William Ritchie was born in Winsor, Ontario in 1954. He studied at NSCAD. In 1976 he moved to Nain, Labrador to participate in Memorial University's Artist-in-the-Community Program. In 1997, he opened Caplin Cove Press, a small fine art printshop in the community of St. Michael's, on Newfoundland's Southern Shore. In addition to his printmaking, Ritchie also works in watercolour, acrylic paint, film, and digital media.
